    • According to Gul MZ (2013)

Excerpt In addition, as a first step towards the identification of phytoconstituents endowed with potent chemopreventive activities, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of AP extracts on the proliferation of four different human tumour cell lines such as human colon adenocarcinoma cells (Colo-205), human retinoblastoma cancer cells (Y79), human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) & Leukemia cells (SupT1). Furthermore, antiproliferative activities using different human cancer cell lines & primary cell line was carried out by MTT method.

    • According to Boye A (2020)

Excerpt Abrus precatorius (L.) leaves are used as folk medicine by the local communities in the western region of Ghana to treat diabetes mellitus; however, this health claim remains unverified scientifically. Subsequently, diabetes mellitus was experimentally established in normoglycaemic adult Sprague-Dawley rats (weighing 150-250 g) of both sexes by sequential injection of Streptozotocin (STZ, 60 mg/kg ip)-reconstituted in sodium citrate buffer & NIC (110 mg/kg ip)-reconstituted in normal saline (1:1 v/v) for 16 weeks.

    • According to Boye A (2021)

Excerpt Diabetes mellitus (DM) was established in adult Sprague-Dawley rats (weighing 120-180 g) of both sexes by daily sequential injection of nicotinamide (48 mg/kg; ip) & Alloxan (120 mg/kg; ip) over a period of 7 days. Except control rats which had fasting blood glucose (FBG) of 4.60 mmol/L, rats having stable FBG (16-21 mmol/L) 7 days post-nicotinamide/Alloxan injection were considered diabetic & were randomly reassigned to one of the following groups (model, APLE (100, 200, & 400 mg/kg, respectively; po) & metformin (300 mg/kg; po)) & treated daily for 18 days.

Olsnes S et al, Studies on the structure & properties of the lectins from Abrus precatorius & Ricinus communis. Biochim Biophys Acta. 405(1):1-10. 1975.-Abstract: The amino acid composition of the isolated A- & B-chains of the toxic lectins Abrin & ricin was determined & compared. Even though the two toxins originate from widely different plants, statistical analysis of the amino acid content indicates extensive homologies in the amino acid sequence of the 4 chains. The intact lectins contain no free SH-groups whereas the isolated A- & B-chains contain close to one free SH-group each. The r…

Nwodo OFC et al, Antisickling effect of Abrus precatorius seed spasmolytic substance. Plant Product Res. 2008; 12:6-9-Abstract: A spasmolytic substance BN, extractable from the seeds of Abrus precatorius has been found to inhibit both metabisulphite- & calcium- induced sickling of human haemoglobin (Hb) SS erythrocytes in vitro. It also inhibited human platelet aggregation elicited by adrenaline (epinephrine) & ADP. In addition, it stabilized Hb SS erythrocyte membrane. The results substantiate the use of the seeds in sickle cell disease,

An isolation procedure is reported for ricin variants from Ricinus communis seeds by using lactamtl-Sepharose affinity matrix, similar to that reported previously for variants of Abrin from Abrus precatorius seeds. Ricin variants, sub-fractionated on carboxymethyl-Sepharose CL-6B ion-exchange chromatography, were characterized further by SDS/P…
