Excerpt daigremontiana had a better cytotoxic effect (IC50 48.53 μg/ml), compared to the non-encapsulated aqua-ethanolic extract (IC50 61.29 μg/ml) in the MDA-MB-231 metastatic breast cancer cell line. The Aranto (Kalanchoe daigremontiana) is a succulent & xerophytic plant that contains glycosides, flavonoids and lipids; these last ones include triterpenoids & bufadienolides that have cytotoxic activity against various cancer cell lines.

Studies on the biological activity of this species are scarce, & there is a lack of data on the cytotoxic activity of KD extracts on epithelial cancer cells in the literature.

Excerpt In our study, we analyzed the phytochemical composition of KD water extract using UHPLC-QTOF-MS & estimated the cytotoxic activity of the extract on human ovarian cancer SKOV-3 cells by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, flow cytometry, luminometric, & fluorescent microscopy techniques. The extract showed significant antiproliferative & cytotoxic activity, induced depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane, & significantly arrested cell cycle in the S & G2/M phases of SKOV-3 cells.
