Excerpt Sijukkot (Lactuca indica L), the plants have been from an area in the village of Toba Samosir, North Sumatera, has long been used & believed to be a medicinal plant, especially as a medicine for diabetes, although it has never been studied. We also tested the anti-diabetic activity of the ethanol extract of LS leaves by in vitro using the alpha amylase enzyme inhibition method & the results showed the IC50: 132,413ppm, it has moderate anti-diabetic activity.

Excerpt The antimicrobial activity of the lettuce extract, was tested with bacteria from clean cultures Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC13883, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Proteus vulgaris ATCC13315, Proteus mirabilis ATCC14153, Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633, and fungi Candida albicans ATCC10231 & Aspergillus niger ATCC16404. The smallest susceptibility to the ethanolic extract of lettuce was exhibited by the bacteria S aureus & P vulgaris (MIC=78,125 g/ml), while the other selected bacteria and fungi showed higher susceptibility (MIC=39,1 g/ml).

Excerpt Antioxidant, antibacterial & antiviral effects of aqueous & methanol extracts of Lactuca sativa var longifolia leaves were investigated. Methanol & aqueous extracts exhibited antiviral activity against HCMV & Cox-B3 viruses with IC50 of 200 μg/ml.

Excerpt The objective of this study was to determine the effect of iodine biofortification (potassium iodate/KIO3/, 5-iodosalicylic acid/5-ISA/, & 3,5-diiodosalicylic acid/3,5-diISA/) on the antioxidant activity of Lactuca sativa L. Moreover, the study has shown that iodine-biofortified LS induces production of ROS in cancer cells, resulting in an anticancer effect by the induction of programmed cancer cell death.
