      Excerpt Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2079), Bacillus subtilis (NCIM 2063), Escherichia coli (NCIM 2065), Salmonella typhimurium (NCIM 2501), Streptococcus pneumoniae (NCIM 5281) & a yeast Candida albicans (NCIM 3471). Overall, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity was observed in 08 plants (ethanolic extracts) & 06 plants (aqueous extracts) against all test bacteria & 07 plants (ethanolic extracts) & 05 plants (aqueous extracts) against Candida albicans.

      Excerpt To study the modulation effect of pro- & anti-inflammatory cytokines following long term use of water-soluble ethanol extracts from different organs of Nyctanthes arbortristis (NAT) in mouse model of arthritis. Oral administration of leaf & fruit extracts in arthritic mice reduced joint homogenate levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, & interleukin-6 on days 2, 14, & 47 in comparison to untreated arthritic mice.

      Excerpt on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cell (EAC) in mice, J of Med Sci, 3 (2): 169–73, 2003-Abstrract: The potential cytotoxic effect of a new benzofuran derivative, 4-hydroxy hexahydrobenzofuran-7-one isolated from Nyctanthes arbor-tristis was evaluated on Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cells in Swiss Albino mice. 4-Hydroxy hexahydrobenzofuran-7-one was administered in a daily dose of 20 mg kg<sup> 1</sup> of mouse after inoculation of Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cell to the mice.

      Excerpt By thin layer chromatography we could isolate six fractions each from the flower extract & the leaf extract, out of which fraction 3 from the flower & fraction 5 from the leaves have exhibited maximum antiproliferative effects with an IC50 value of 10 μg/ml on HeLa cells, 5 μg/ml on HepG2 cells and > 200 μg/ml on normal lymphocytes, indicating that they are least toxic to the healthy cells. This study aims at the extraction of bioactive metabolites from the flowers & leaves of parijat (Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn.) & Evaluation of their cytotoxic properties on HeLa cells, HepG2 cells & also on normal human peripheral lymphocytes.

    • According to Misra P (1991)

      Excerpt Alcoholic extracts of 44 plants were screened in vivo & in vitro for antimalarial activity against the NK 65 strain of Plasmodium berghei. Jurinea macrocephala, Artemisia scoparia, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, Eniscostema hyssopifolium, Aegle marmelos, Cinnamomum tamala, Momordica dioica & Prunus persica were found to possess schizonticidal activity (50% & above) in vivo as well as in vitro at a dose of 1 gm/kg × 4 days & 100 μg/ml respectively, whereas 12 other plant extracts were active only in vivo & 3 plant extracts in in vitro only.
