Excerpt Ethanolic extract of SJ produced reduction in CCl4 induced elevated levels of SGPT, SGOT, SALP and Serum bilirubin & reversed total protein in rats indicating hepatoprotective activity at the dose of 200mg/kg body weight & was comparable to that of standard drug Liv-52(1ml/kg body weight).Further histopathological studies indicated that the animals pretreated with ethanolic extract of SJ was minimal with distinct preservation of structures & architectural frame of the hepatic cells, &dis comparable to standard Liv-52. Hepatoprotective activity of Ethanolic extract of SJ was evaluated by carbon tetrachloride induced toxicity with standard hepatoprotective drug as Liv-52.

Excerpt From the results obtained, it would appear that SJ does not cause large variations in body weights (p>0.05) but causes a few changes in the liver of albino rats which is not significantly different (p>0.05) from that of the control group. The results obtained showed slight variation in the agility, food intake & physical appearances of the rats with mild congestion, fatty changes & necrosis in the liver.

Excerpt The toxicity of powdered Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl. The results obtained showed slight variation on the physical signs/body appearance of the animals & mild histopathlogic 1esions such as congestion, fatty changes & necrosis in selective tissues such as the liver, blood vessels, kidney, lung & testis but the brain, eyes, intestines (small and large) & heart tissues were essentially normal.

Then the animals were fasted overnight; hyperglycemic state was induced using reduced dose of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg) & animals were randomly divided into five groups (n = 7); group A received the HFD + STZ (35 mg/kg i.p.); group B received HFD + STZ + gliberclamide (10 mg/kg; i.p); groups C, D & E were administered the HFD + streptozotocin with different doses of the ethanol extract (30, 35 & 100 mg/kg p.o., respectively).
