Excerpt In the present study, the ethanolic extract of the roots of Cleome rutidosperma was tested for hypoglycaemic activity in normoglycaemic & alloxan induced hyperglycaemic rats at doses levels of 200 & 400 mg/kg p.o respectively. The study revealed that the root extract of CR caused significant reduction in the blood glucose level in both normoglycaemic & alloxan induced diabetic rats at the tested dose levels in a dose dependant manner.

Excerpt The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of oral administration of aqueous extracts of Cleome rutidosperma leaves & Senecio biafrae roots on blood glucose, biochemical parameters, lipid profile, antioxidant enzymes activity & hepatic glucose regulating enzyme activities in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The aqueous extract of both plants at different doses (125mg/Kg, 250mg/Kg & 500mg/Kg) administered orally to the diabetic rats for 28 days, produced significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the level of blood glucose, feed & water intake as well as serum cholesterol, triacylglycerols, low density lipoprotein (LDL), creatinine, urea, bilirubin & activity of liver marker enzymes such as AST, ALT, ALP & TBARS in liver and kidney.

Excerpt the present study aimed to investigate the acute antihyperglycemic effects of four different solvent extracts (Petroleum ether, acetone, absolute ethanol & water) of two plants: Cleome rutidosperma (leaves) & Senecio biafrae (root) in STZ-induced diabetic mice & their in vitro antioxidant activities as well as their phytoconstituents. All extracts as well as the standard drug, glibenclamide (at 600 μg/kg body weight) significantly lowered blood glucose level (p<0.05) of the diabetic mice by 28.784±15.46-40.866±15.61% for CR & 10.652±6.36-19.858±7.65% for Senecio biafrae within 6 hrs of extracts administration.
