      Excerpt The effect of hydroalcoholic extract of poly herbal preparation containing seeds of Eugenia jambolana, fruits of Momordica charantia, & leaves of Ocimum sanctum was investigated in normal, glucose load conditions & alloxan induced diabetic rats. The objective of this study is to induce experimental diabetes mellitus using Alloxan in normal Albino Wistar rats & study the anti-diabetic activity of polyherbal formulation by comparison of changes in body weight & levels of glucose between normal & diabetic rats.

Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extract of OT showed significant anti-diabetic & anti-hyperlipidemic activity against STZ + nicotinamide induced diabetes mellitus in rats.

The present study was undertaken to assess the effect of OS on three important enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism [glucokinase (GK) (EC 2.7.1.2), hexokinase (HK) (EC 2.7.1.1) & phospho-fructokinase (PFK) (EC 2.7.1.11)] along with glycogen content of insulin-dependent (Skeletal muscle and liver) and insulin-independent tissues (kidneys and Brain) in STZ (65 mg/kg) induced model of diabetes for 30 days.

      Excerpt Reduction in sinusoidal congestion, cloudy swelling & fatty changes & regenerative areas of the liver were observed on histopathological examination in groups C, D & E, whereas group B showed only hepatic necrosis. The hepatoprotective effect was evaluated by performing an assay of the serum proteins, albumin globulin ratio, alkaline phosphatase, transaminases & liver histopathology.

Conclusions: This in vitro study demonstrates for the first time that OTEO has potential anti-gastric cancer activity & may induce apoptosis in AGS cells through extrinsic & intrinsic pathway.

      Excerpt It was observed that the treatment of a squamous cervical cancer cell line, SiHa with the ethanolic extracts of leaves of Ocimum sanctum & Azadirachta indica & roots of Withania somnifera at IC50 values for 48 h resulted in formation of internucleosomal fragments of DNA. These results clearly show that these plant extracts, which have previously been shown to have anticarcinogenic activity, can induce apoptosis in SiHa, a cervical cancer cell line.
