Extrait The effect of hydroalcoholic extract of poly herbal preparation containing seeds of Eugenia jambolana, fruits of Momordica charantia, & leaves of Ocimum sanctum was investigated in normal, glucose load conditions & alloxan induced diabetic rats. The objective of this study is to induce experimental diabetes mellitus using Alloxan in normal Albino Wistar rats & study the anti-diabetic activity of polyherbal formulation by comparison of changes in body weight & levels of glucose between normal & diabetic rats.

Selon Rao A (2013)
Extrait The aim of the study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity of ethanolic extract of leaves of plant Ocimum sanctum in alloxan induced diabetes in rats. Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of common metabolic disorders that Share the phenotype of hyperglycaemia resulting from defects of reduced insulin secretion, decreased glucose utilization and increase in glucose production.

Extrait Ocimum sanctum (OS) has been mentioned in Indian system of traditional medicine to be of value in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The present study was undertaken to assess the effect of OS on three important enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism [glucokinase (GK) (EC 2.7.1.2), hexokinase (HK) (EC 2.7.1.1) & phospho-fructokinase (PFK) (EC 2.7.1.11)] along with glycogen content of insulin-dependent (Skeletal muscle and liver) and insulin-independent tissues (kidneys and Brain) in STZ (65 mg/kg) induced model of diabetes for 30 days.

Extrait The oral anti-diabetic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of OT (125, 250 & 500 mg/kg) was studied against streptozotocin (STZ) (50 mg/kg; i.p.) + nicotinamide (120 mg/kg; i.p.) induced diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extract of OT showed significant anti-diabetic & anti-hyperlipidemic activity against STZ + nicotinamide induced diabetes mellitus in rats.

Extrait In summary, the results of the present study suggest that the fixed oil extracted from OS leaves exerted anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hyperlipidemic & free radical scavenging effects in diabetic rats, thus providing renal protection against diabetes. The present study was conducted to elucidate the effects of the fixed oil extracted from OS leaves on the blood glucose levels & serum lipid profile of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Extrait Reduction in sinusoidal congestion, cloudy swelling & fatty changes & regenerative areas of the liver were observed on histopathological examination in groups C, D & E, whereas group B showed only hepatic necrosis. The hepatoprotective effect was evaluated by performing an assay of the serum proteins, albumin globulin ratio, alkaline phosphatase, transaminases & liver histopathology.

Selon Kamyab AA (2013)
Extrait In liver, essential oils & extracts of OS could prevent oxidative stress by increasing glutathione peroxidae & catalase & were also effective in prevention of hepatic steatosis. Recently its efficacy against inflammatory response, hepatic injury & gastric ulcer has been elucidated in animal studies.

Extrait We conducted the present research study to investigate the antileishmanial & immunomodulatory effects of Ocimum sanctum & Cocos nucifera during the progression of visceral leishmaniasis in BALB/c mouse model. This was accompanied by an up-scaling of the DTH response, skewing of the humoral response towards Th1 type & hepatoprotection in the form of normalization of liver function tests.

Extrait The effects of Ocimum tenuiflorum essential oil (OTEO) against gastric cancer remain unknown and merit investigation. Conclusions: This in vitro study demonstrates for the first time that OTEO has potential anti-gastric cancer activity & may induce apoptosis in AGS cells through extrinsic & intrinsic pathway.

Extrait It was observed that the treatment of a squamous cervical cancer cell line, SiHa with the ethanolic extracts of leaves of Ocimum sanctum & Azadirachta indica & roots of Withania somnifera at IC50 values for 48 h resulted in formation of internucleosomal fragments of DNA. These results clearly show that these plant extracts, which have previously been shown to have anticarcinogenic activity, can induce apoptosis in SiHa, a cervical cancer cell line.

Extrait We investigated the combinatorial chemopreventive efficacy of Azadirachta indica (AI) & Ocimum sanctum (OS) against N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG)-induced gastric carcinogenesis, based on changes in oxidant-antioxidant status, cell proliferation, apoptosis & angiogenesis. Coadministration of AI & OS extract suppressed MNNG-induced gastric carcinomas accompanied by modulation of the oxidant-antioxidant status, inhibition of cell proliferation & angiogenesis, & induction of apoptosis.

Extrait We report the chemopreventive property of an ethanolic extract of the leaves of Ocimum sanctum (a traditional medicinal plant) on 7, 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene induced skin papillomagenesis in male Swiss albino mice. A significant reduction in the values of tumor incidence, average number of tumors per tumor bearing mice & the cumulative number of papillomas was observed in mice treated topically with the leaf extract of O.

Extrait Therefore, the antitumor mechanism of ethanol extracts of Ocimum sanctum (EEOS) was elucidated in A549 cells in vitro & the Lewis lung Carcinoma (LLC) animal model. Although Ocimum sanctum has been used extensively for its medicinal values in India & China, its antitumor activity against human non-small cell lung Carcinoma (NSCLC) A549 cells has not been investigated until now.
