      Excerpt Group III consists of alloxan induced diabetic rats that were given daily sterile solution, ethanolic leaf extract of Pedilanthus tithymaloides (500 mg/kg), Group IV consists of alloxan induced diabetic rats that were given daily sterile solution, ethanolic leaf extract of PT (1000 mg/kg), Group V consists of alloxan induced diabetic rats that were given daily sterile solution & Glibenclamide(5mg/kg) respectively for 21 days by an intragastric tube with free access of food and water. This study assessed the hypoglycaemic & antihyperlipidemic activities of whole ethanolic leaf extract of Pedilanthus tithymaloides in alloxan-induced diabetic albino Wistar rats.

      Excerpt steroids, tannins, triterpenes, coumarins & saponins which have been shown to possess anti-diabetic, antioxidant, analgesic, stomachic, hemostatic, anti-microbial, antifungal, anti- helminthic, antimutagenic, anti-tubercular, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, abortifacient, antivenom, antibiotic, antiseptic, antihemorrhagic, antiviral & antitumor effect & useful for venereal diseases. The significant bioactive principles reported in PT were diterpenoids, triterpene, flavonoids, carotenoids, pedilanthus coumarin A, pedilanthins coumarin B, 5,7-dihydroxy-8-(2-methylbutyryl)-4-phenylcournarin, theraphin C, isodispar B, isodisparinol B & isomesuol.

      Excerpt To extend its utility & to fully exploit its medicinal potential, we have evaluated the in vitro antiviral activity of a methanolic extract of PT leaves & its isolated compounds against Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2). Bioactivity-guided studies revealed that the extract & one of its constituents, luteolin, had potent antiviral activity against wild-type & clinical isolates of HSV-2 (EC50 48.5–52.6 & 22.4–27.5 μg/ml, respectively), with nearly complete inhibition at 86.5–101.8 & 40.2–49.6 μg/ml, respectively.

      Excerpt Pertaining to the anti-inflammatory activity, the intraperitoneal administration of the tincture inhibited carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema, whereas in the scavenging assays the tincture showed to be effective against all the assayed ROS & RNS, specially for HO* (IC50 = 345+/-77 microg/mL), O2*- (IC50 = 143+/-7 microg/mL), HOCl (IC50 = 113+/-20 microg/mL), ONOO- (IC50 = 44+/-3 microg/mL), & *NO (IC50 = 54+/-4 microg/mL), but displayed weak activity in the DPPH* assay. In the present study, a tincture from PT collected in Cuba was evaluated for its in vivo anti-inflammatory activity, using the rat paw oedema assay, & for its in vitro scavenging effects on reactive oxygen species (ROS) (HO*, O2*-, HOCl, ROO* & H2O2), reactive nitrogen species (RNS) (ONOO- & *NO), and DPPH* radical.

Among the different extracts, MTOH extract (MEPT) at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight showed significantly more anti-inflammatory activity (percentage inhibition 81.44%) in comparison with other extracts using the carrageenin induced paw edema model as compared to the standard drug, Phenylbutazone with percentage inhibition of 82.72%.
