Excerpt The objective of this work was to determine the effect of ethanolic extract of Ravenala madagascariensis on pregnant Wistar rats & their offspring. In rats, the treatment did not affect weight gain during pregnancy; normalized glycemia values & increased lipid profile; improved the response to the glucose tolerance test & maintained its effect days after administration; did not modify the water consumed, the urine excreted, the urinary biochemical parameters, nor the maternal reproductive parameters.

Excerpt Androsta-1,4-dien-3,16-dione was isolated for the first time from the plant kingdom of the ethanolic extract of the Ravenala madagascariensis' inflorescence by the bio-guided method. The pharmacological mechanism of its vaso-relaxing action was analysed on isolated rat aorta using free-endothelial vascular tissue, specific contracting reagents (CaCl2 & KCl), antagonist (propranolol), enzyme inhibitors (L-NAME, methylene blue) & channel blocker (glibenclamide).

Excerpt The aim of this study was to assess whether inhibition of α-glucosidase [1] and α-amylase [2] by ethanol extracts of 40 Madagascarian plants is the scientific rationale behind their traditional anti-diabetic use.The ethanolic extracts were generally inactive against pancreatic α-amylase, & only bark extracts of Psidium guajava & Vangueria madagascariensis showed good activity with IC50 of 10.6 and 11.6 µg/mL, respectively. All active extracts had large amounts of tannins in the HPLC chromatogram, except aerial parts of Euphorbia hirta & leaves of Artocarpus heterophylla, Ravenala madagascariensis & Zanthoxylum tsihanimposa, which contained only low levels of tannins.
