Extrait The objective of this work was to determine the effect of ethanolic extract of Ravenala madagascariensis on pregnant Wistar rats & their offspring. In rats, the treatment did not affect weight gain during pregnancy; normalized glycemia values & increased lipid profile; improved the response to the glucose tolerance test & maintained its effect days after administration; did not modify the water consumed, the urine excreted, the urinary biochemical parameters, nor the maternal reproductive parameters.

Extrait Leaves of Ravenala madagascariensis have been traditionally used in the treatment of diabetes & was scientifically proven to be effective as an antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, renoprotective & antioxidant agent. Up to 80% of the patients with pancreatic cancer are found to be diabetic at the time of diagnosis.

Extrait The ethanolic and aqueous extracts showed a significant inhibitory effect on glucose diffusion in vitro and accordingly were screened at 200 and 400mg/kg, b.w for the in vivo antidiabetic activity on alloxan induced diabetic rats. Ravenala madagascariensis Sonn., (Strelitziaceae) commonly known as Traveler’s palm has been widely used in traditional system of medicine for diabetes.

Extrait Androsta-1,4-dien-3,16-dione was isolated for the first time from the plant kingdom of the ethanolic extract of the Ravenala madagascariensis' inflorescence by the bio-guided method. The pharmacological mechanism of its vaso-relaxing action was analysed on isolated rat aorta using free-endothelial vascular tissue, specific contracting reagents (CaCl2 & KCl), antagonist (propranolol), enzyme inhibitors (L-NAME, methylene blue) & channel blocker (glibenclamide).

Extrait Conclusion: Thus, our results validate its traditional claim in the treatment of diabetes by stimulating the secretion of insulin, thereby suggesting a possible mechanism of its antidiabetic effect. The objective of this study was to establish the cytotoxicity profile & & to evaluate the insulin secretagogue effect of ethanolic root extract of Ravenala madagascariensis.

Extrait The aim of this study was to assess whether inhibition of α-glucosidase [1] and α-amylase [2] by ethanol extracts of 40 Madagascarian plants is the scientific rationale behind their traditional anti-diabetic use.The ethanolic extracts were generally inactive against pancreatic α-amylase, & only bark extracts of Psidium guajava & Vangueria madagascariensis showed good activity with IC50 of 10.6 and 11.6 µg/mL, respectively. All active extracts had large amounts of tannins in the HPLC chromatogram, except aerial parts of Euphorbia hirta & leaves of Artocarpus heterophylla, Ravenala madagascariensis & Zanthoxylum tsihanimposa, which contained only low levels of tannins.
