Excerpt The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic, apoptotic, & cell cycle effect of four fractions obtained from the whole aerial part of Solanum nigrum, against three cancer cell lines (MCF-7, A2780, & HT29) & one normal cell line (MRC-5). Conclusion: The ethyl acetate fraction from SN strongly inhibited the growth of breast, ovarian, & colon cancer cell lines, & it was three folds selective against the normal fibroblasts.

Excerpt Hepatic carcinoma cell line (HepG2), cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) & baby hamster kidney (BHK) used as normal non-cancerous cells were evaluated for cytotoxicity against isolated fractions. The results demonstrated that S.N fractions exhibited anticancer activity against hepatic & cervical cancer cell lines with non-toxic effect in normal cells.

Excerpt The hepatoprotective effects of Solanum nigrum water & methanolic extracts were studied in rats injected with 0.2 ml/kg carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) for 10 consecutive days. The water extracts showed a hepatoprotective effect against CCl4- induced liver damage, which was evident by the decrease in serum aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT) & alkaline phosphates (ALP) activities bilirubin concentration & by mild histopathological lesions when compared with the group of rats injected with CCl4 alone.

Excerpt nigrum aqueous extracts (150 mg/kg) with ethanol showed marked attenuation of ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity, as evidenced by significant reductions of serum transaminases (p < 0.01), and variation of hepatic oxidative indices (p < 0.05) and GSTA1 (p < 0.05), compared with the model group & mice that received S.N aqueous extracts (200 mg/kg). Conclusion: These results suggested that SN has hepatoprotective effects against ethanol-induced injury both in vitro and in vivo, & can protect the integrity of hepatocytes & thus reduce the release of liver GSTA1, which contributes to improved liver detoxification.
