This study’s objectives were to explore the nutrient analysis of elephant foot yam tuber & observe the anti-hyperglycemic effect on both diabetic and non-diabetic rats.

      Extrait In the present study, the effect of the acetone extract of elephant-foot yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson) at 0.1 & 0.25% in the diet of streptozotocin-induced male Wistar diabetic rats was studied. The results clearly indicate that the acetone extract of elephant foot yam is an effective anti-diabetic agent for streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

      Extrait The elevated serum enzymatic levels of AST, ALT, ALP & total protein were significantly restored towards normal by pre‐treatment with ethanolic extract of AC (p<0.001).However, no significant alteration in the liver marker enzymes a&the antioxidant markers in liver tissue was observed in the only extract treated groups when compared to control, indicating their non-toxic nature. Conclusion: The results of this study strongly indicate that ethanolic extract of AC has potent hepatoprotective action against ethanol induced hepatic damage particularly by scavenging free radicals and combating oxidative stress.
